That changed after their neighbor, Rosa Solares, taught them how to use corn (as it is cheapest), make tortillas and showed them how she uses lard. They were now eating more calories every day but there was still a question whether this food is giving them enough nutrition to be healthy.

I’m sure it is hard enough just to imagine, without having to experience to feed yourself and family with just 1$ per day. In today’s environment, when we have so much food choices, fabricated food, million versions of the same product and so much food waste, we still have so many places like Peña Blanca where people need to fight to survive with 1$ per day. This makes me feel really sad and useless. How did that happen? Luckier parts of the planet throw away food and choose carefully what to eat while at the same time, not so far away, people don’t have basic food to survive!?

Water https://www.newdayorphanage.org/water/ Fri, 12 Feb 2016 10:55:33 +0000 http://www.anarieldesign.com/themedemos/pena/?p=136 Continue reading Water ]]> Finding out that the plastic pipe coming out of the side of a hill is only water available.

When you find an insect and filth in the water but you still need to drink it as it is only choice you have, it’s very hard. After two weeks Chris was lying sick on the floor and guys were not sure if they’ll be able to afford the cost of a doctor or medicine. Chris ended up with giardia, a parasite that infects the small intestine.

Almost 1 out of 10 people in the world can’t drink clean water. Even if you don’t die because of the contaminated water you’ll probably get sick. How big is the problem with not having access to clean water? Well, if someone gets sick like Chris, he or she would’t be able to work and feed his family. Being sick also means extra cost, needs for doctors, medicine etc. For people surviving with just 1$ per day, this is often not available. At the end due to the lack of clean water, that they can’t afford, they are left with medical costs to treat conditions caused by bad water quality that they can’t afford either.

Education https://www.newdayorphanage.org/education/ Fri, 12 Feb 2016 10:55:05 +0000 http://www.anarieldesign.com/themedemos/pena/?p=131 Continue reading Education ]]> Only 60% Guatemalans speak fluent Spanish. Mostly indigenous people are not speaking Spanish, is this the reason why they are poor?

In school in Pena Blanca children learn in Spanish. More than 40% of the children don’t graduate as they don’t have resources and need to work to survive. Girls often leave to get married. 50% of girls get married and start a family before 19. In documentary Regina’s family can’t even afford to send her to the public school.
Public school is free? Well, kind of. Regina’s family still needs to pay for uniform, books, supplies and this is more than most families in that area can afford to pay. Most days Regina needs to look after other children and help around the house so her mother can work in fields, this way she doesn’t have time to go to school and learn.
What is her chance?
With the help of a recent scholarship Regina is going to school for the first time.

Microfinance https://www.newdayorphanage.org/microfinance/ Fri, 12 Feb 2016 10:50:58 +0000 http://www.anarieldesign.com/themedemos/pena/?p=127 Continue reading Microfinance ]]> How financial services can help someone living in poverty and save for long term goals like their kids’ education and emergencies?

For the Indigenous people it’s impossible to get a loan or open a savings account in the bank with only 1$ a day income. There isn’t any bank near Pena Blanca and it’s also nearly impossible, without speaking Spanish, to deal with the bank people and get a loan.

But there is a hope for villagers. Grameen Guatemala Microfinance is helping with loans and saving accounts to bring themselves and their families out of poverty. They are especially supporting women, meeting with them at the Pena Blanca and helping with loans and saving accounts. Lots of them, thanks to that, has opened small business and manage to save some money for the long term goals.
